Featured StoryGiving
By Savannah Bowen November is a month characterized by gratitude and giving worldwide. It’s great to recognize this season that embraces giving and philanthropy, especially as we at BRITE work to raise funds for our year-round programs in Haiti. This month we took some time to reflect on what generosity means in our country, both culturally and developmentally. Every culture has its own practices of generosity, and in many countries like Haiti where poverty constrains resources, giving is an essential part of survival. There is a profound culture of generosity in Haiti, though it looks different from what happens in places like the U.S.

The Rodaille School
In 2009 we started our community school, Ecole Jeremie St. Fort (EJSF) de Rodaille, Haiti with 3 staff members and seventy students varying in ages from 5 to 12 years. Our school helped the community realize that education is normal and attainable. They do not have to create hardship for their family by selling their animals or fields, often their only source of income, to pay for their children’s education. Or worse, send them to Port-au-Prince to become restaveks (child slaves). Also, it has created a peace of mind for some of the parents, because the children do not have to cross the rivers and leave the community to go to neighboring towns to attend school (even though some of our students still have to walk from hours away and have to cross many rivers to come to us). Lastly, it has created a sense of pride in the community. The school has put them on the map.

This program will help us develop a relationship and “go the distance” with some individuals who would otherwise not have the financial, social and emotional support to become self-sufficient and productive members of their society.

Many of our students and community members have very little access to medical care. In the 2017-2018 school year we lost two students to preventable illnesses. In 2018, we decided to change this.
